When I’m on the run and a craving for a fresh, juicy burger strikes, the last thing I want to do is grab traditional fast food. When my stomach started to growl as I was on my way toward the Pennsylvania Turnpike last week, I remembered a nearby fast-casual restaurant recommendation: Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in West Chester, Pa. (Currently there are no locations in Delaware, though there is another Pennsylvania location in Broomall.)
I originally ordered a single burger but was encouraged to get a double because the patties are only about as thick as a CD. Initially I was skeptical about the size, but it turned out to be exactly the right amount of food. The crispy-edged patties are made of 100 percent ground beef, pressed thin and served on toasted buns. Mine came slathered with Freddy’s Sauce, which is similar to Russian dressing.
The salty shoestring fries were a perfect accompaniment, and a milkshake proved the perfect end to a soul-soothing meal.
