FREDDY’S FROZEN CUSTARD & STEAK BURGERS is offering a different choice Election Day – east side or west.

The Wichita, Kansas-based burger chain – known for its thinly pressed steakburgers, shoestring fries and frozen custard — opens its second Springfield location at 3784 Wabash Ave. on Tuesday.

District manager Mike Copsy said fans of the 3205 Clear Lake Ave. stop will only notice two minor changes – a more traditional Freddy’s floor plan and one drink option changed.

“The Clear Lake, Dirksen site was originally an Arby’s, so the building isn’t a typical Freddy’s layout,” Copsy said. “And we’re swapping out the raspberry tea with SoBe vitamin water.

“The only significant change is the address.”

The opening marks the third Freddy’s for the franchise, owned by Jerry and Carol Myerscough. Family members say two additional stores are planned for central Illinois, though no word yet on locations or timelines.

The family also operates eight ARBY’S throughout the region under the Charleston Food Inc. name.

Brothers Bill and Randy Simon, along with business partner Scott Redler, opened the first Freddy’s in Wichita in 2002. The brothers named the business after their father, World War II veteran Freddy Simon, and the menu is reminiscent of the all-American meals he used to prepare for his family.
